Ask an Audiologist: Are Siemens Aquaris Waterproof Hearing Aids Good for Excessive Sweating?

Hearing aids are technological marvels that now come with features people could only dream about a generation ago.

Believe it or not, hearing instrument technology advances at a blistering pace.

How can your hearing health provider know what hearing aid is right for you?

Part of an Audiologist’s or Hearing Instrument Practitioner’s job is to recommend hearing aids based on the level of their patients’ hearing loss. They must also take into consideration the lifestyle and individual needs of their patients.

Do they socialise a lot in environments with a lot of people or do they spend a lot of time at home in a quieter environment, are they physically active and the list can go on.

Trying to gain insight into the day-to-day lives of your patients and translating that into the best hearing aid for the demands of their everyday life is how a hearing health professional provides expert advice.

Ask an Audiologist

I have a question about the Aquaris hearing aid. I have prominent hearing loss in both my ears and I’m curious to know how well this can be programmed to suit my needs? Since I have severe anxiety and sweat a lot because of it, a waterproof hearing aid sounds like a dream, especially when I’ve dealt with water damaged hearing aids for so long.

Audiologist Response

My name is Stephanie and I am an Audiologist at Hearing Solutions. Thank you for your submission to Ask an Audiologist.

Unfortunately, I cannot be sure how well the Aquaris hearing aids could be programmed to suit your needs without completing a full hearing evaluation. The fitting range of this hearing aid is such that it could accommodate most patients, but depending on the type, severity and configuration of your hearing loss it may or may not be an ideal option. To fully understand how the Aquarius hearing aids could work for you, I recommend scheduling an appointment for a hearing aid evaluation with an Audiologist. We would be happy to book you a free hearing test appointment at one of our locations should you be interested.

There may also be some other hearing aids that would be more suitable for you. For example, Phonak has recently launched their ‘Belong’ platform of hearing aids which might be an option. These devices also have an Ingress Protection (IP) rating of 68 (same as the Aquaris), which indicates protection against dust and water. You can click here to learn more about IP ratings. There are also some other strategies to prevent hearing aids from sweat-related damage that I’d suggest you speak to your Audiologist about if you haven’t already. For example, hearing aid drying kits are available in electrical and non-electrical versions to prevent moisture buildup. Other accessories such as hearing aid sweatbands are also available.

I hope that this information is helpful to you and I wish you all the best. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me if you have any further questions.

Warm regards,

Stephanie Loder, B.Sc., M.Cl.Sc., Reg. CASLPO Audiologist, Aud(C)
