Ask an Audiologist – Hearing While on a Phone

Hearing aids and phones are a bad combination for many hearing aid wearers who experience feedback or whistling and difficulty hearing. However, hearing aid technology is constantly changing and improving, with devices that are made specifically with these issues in mind. Hearing Solutions Audiolgist and Trainer, Tracy Saunders provides advice on this topic.

If you have a hearing health related question that you would like answered by an experienced professional email us at askaudiologist@hearingsolutions.ca.

Ask An Audiologist…

How do these devices work when using a regular phone or cell phone? Is there a high pitched sound when using the phone? This is what my father-in-law and sister experience while on their phones. They are unable to wear their hearing aids while on the phone. So, does this mean they have to talk on the phone without their hearing aid to avoid hearing this high pitched sound, but then be unable to hear anyone while on the phone?

Audiologist Response…

Hello,

Thank you for your inquiry. I have good news! The new hearing aids we provide do not give this high pitched whistle (called Feedback) while using the phone. Patients are able to enjoy comfortable and clear hearing on the phone with these hearing aids.

Hearing aids range in price, but we are able to work within most patients’ budgets. We also have various payment plans.

Please feel free to contact any one of our 14 clinics if you would like more information or to book an appointment for a ree hearing test.

Best regards,

Tracy Saunders, M.Cl.Sc., Reg. CASLPO
