Common Signs of Hearing Loss

Constantly Asking People to Repeat

Trouble Following Conversations in Noise

Turning up the TV Louder Than Others Prefer

Feeling Tired After Socializing

More than half of Canadian adults between 40-79 have some degree of high frequency hearing loss.

Muffled or “dull” sounds, difficulty distinguishing speech—especially consonants—and trouble following conversations in noisy settings are common early signs. You might frequently ask others to repeat themselves, turn up TV or radio volume, or struggle with phone calls. High-pitched voices (women, children) may become hard to understand, making others seem like they’re mumbling. Other signs include difficulty locating sounds and avoiding conversations or noisy places.

What factors affect the cost of hearing aids?

Connectivity such as Bluetooth; advancements like rechargeable batteries, app compatibility, or full audio‑bandwidth streaming; adaptability to different listening environments; and lifestyle features like reducing noise while driving or improving conversations at social events.

Do you offer financing options for hearing aids?

Yes. We offer various financing and funding support, including a 0% financing program. Options and any special promotions will be reviewed with you during your assessment.

Are there government programs that can help cover the cost of hearing aids?

Programs may include Ontario Ministry of Health’s Assistive Devices Program (ADP), Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC), Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB), Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB), Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP), Ontario Works (OW).

We can also help you apply for any additional funding available.

What is included in the cost of hearing aids?

Our HearForever Package ensures ongoing care and support, including adjustments, cleaning, in‑clinic servicing, annual appointments and more. All hearing aids include a manufacturer’s warranty plus a loss and damage warranty.

Why should you prioritize quality over cheap hearing aids?

Cheaper devices often break more easily and are less effective, leading to lower use and higher total cost over time. Investing in a high‑quality device aligned to your needs improves outcomes and longevity.

Why buy hearing aids from Hearing Solutions?

Hearing Solutions is Ontario’s largest independent hearing aid provider. We carry leading brands including Phonak, Signia, Widex, Oticon, Unitron, Starkey, Bernafon, and ReSound. Our clinicians match technology to your lifestyle, explain financing options and available support programs, and support you over the long term.

Which hearing aid type is best for me?

After a comprehensive hearing assessment, we’ll recommend hearing aid options based on your needs. Styles include Invisible-in-the-Canal (IIC), Completely-in-the-Canal (CIC), In-the-Canal (ITC), In-the-Ear (ITE), Receiver-in-Canal (RIC), and Behind-the-Ear (BTE) devices, as well as the completely invisible Phonak Lyric. There is no one-size-fits-all solution — the right choice depends on your hearing loss, ear anatomy, lifestyle, and personal preferences.

Are there different coloured hearing aids?

Yes. You can choose discreet tones or colours that match your personal style.

What is the difference between Behind‑The‑Ear (BTE) and Receiver‑In‑The‑Ear (RITE)?

BTE sits behind the ear and suits mild to profound loss with powerful amplification. RITE places the receiver in the canal for a more discreet look, appropriate for mild to moderately severe loss.

What is the difference between In‑The‑Canal (ITC) and Completely‑In‑The‑Canal (CIC)?

Both are custom‑made. ITC suits mild to moderately severe loss; CIC fits deeper and is more discreet, typically for mild to moderate loss.

How long do rechargeable hearing aids last?

Depending on usage, up to 24 hours on a single charge. Rechargeable batteries last about 40% longer than disposables and most models quick‑charge.

How do I know if a Phonak Lyric hearing aid is right for me?

Candidacy is assessed by a Certified Lyric Fitter based on hearing loss, medical history, ear anatomy, and lifestyle.

What are the advantages of Phonak Lyric hearing aids?

Placed deep in the canal, Lyric is 100% invisible and designed for continuous wear—24/7—for several months with no charging or daily handling.

How long is the battery life?

Lyric is a single‑use device worn continuously for up to 120 days (varies by individual), after which a new device is inserted by a clinician.

Can I wear Lyric in the water?

Water‑resistant for routine moisture exposure, but avoid submerging in deep water.

What is an invisable hearing aid?

An invisible hearing aid is a very small, custom-made device that fits deep into the ear canal so it cannot be seen from the outside. Options like IIC (Invisible-in-the-Canal) devices and the Phonak Lyric offer discreet amplification while preserving natural sound cues. They’re ideal for people who prefer a hidden solution without behind-the-ear components, typically for mild to moderate hearing loss.

Can I use headsets or earbuds with Lyric?

Over‑ear headsets and standard iPhone earphones are fine. Avoid in‑ear earbuds or earplugs that insert into the canal.

Can I adjust the settings after placement?

Yes. Use the SoundLync remote magnet to adjust volume and power or sleep mode.

Do I need to wear my hearing aids all the time?

Wear them as prescribed to ensure a successful adaptation process.

Will my hearing aids eliminate background noise?

No device removes all background noise, but modern aids automatically improve speech understanding in noise.

Will hearing aids restore my hearing to normal?

Hearing aids assist your hearing but do not restore it to normal or halt progression of loss.

Can hearing aids help all types of hearing loss?

All age‑related hearing loss can be helped through amplification. A test will confirm suitability.

Can hearing aids help in noisy environments?

Yes. Today’s devices, especially AI‑enabled models, reduce background noise and enhance speech clarity in noise.

Are you ever too old to benefit from hearing aids?

No. At any age, hearing supports communication and connection.

What are some common signs of hearing loss?

  • Struggling to understand speech in groups or with background noise
  • Missing parts of conversations or asking others to repeat
  • Feeling that others are mumbling
  • Family complains about TV/radio volume
  • Fatigue from straining to hear

What is an audiogram?

An audiogram charts the softest sounds you can hear across frequencies during testing. It helps diagnose hearing loss and guide device selection.

Do I need a doctor’s referral to schedule a hearing test?

No referral is required. Book directly by phone or online.

Are hearing tests painful?

No. Tests are non‑invasive and comfortable; most of the assessment involves listening to very soft tones.

What is involved in a hearing test?

An audiologist determines the softest sounds you can hear. The visit is typically under an hour. Adults 18+ receive comprehensive in‑clinic assessments at no cost; other services (in‑home, workplace, child tests, or record requests) may have a fee.

Why was I advised to bring a friend or family member?

A familiar voice helps evaluate benefit during demonstrations and supports decision‑making during the consultation.

Can your clinic help me with tinnitus?

Yes. We assess for tinnitus and review management options.

What is tinnitus?

Perceived ringing, hissing, or buzzing without an external source; often related to hearing loss or noise exposure and associated with many potential health factors.

What is a Hearing Instrument Specialist?

A Hearing Instrument Specialist (HIS) — also known as a Hearing Instrument Practitioner (HIP) or Hearing Instrument Dispenser — is a regulated professional in Ontario who is trained and authorized to assess hearing, fit and adjust hearing aids, provide counselling, fabricate earmoulds, and perform routine hearing aid repairs and maintenance. HIS/HIP professionals work closely with patients to recommend appropriate hearing solutions based on their test results, listening needs, and lifestyle.

What is Aural Rehabilitation?

The ongoing counselling and education that help you get the most from hearing instruments, especially for new users.

What is an audiologist?

University‑trained clinicians who prevent, evaluate, and rehabilitate hearing and related communication disorders, and can advise on assistive listening devices.
